"If someone had asked me, I wouldn’t have changed a thing - not a single thing. I would still have chosen to be born here, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea."
This is the story of a peninsula and the seas that embrace it - the story of a diverse people with ancient traditions, a deep respect for land and sea, and a special care for all the creatures who live there.
It is the story of a guardian: a keeper of the sea - not of a lighthouse, but of life itself.
To mark the world tour of the training ship Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) set out to share Italy’s commitment to protecting marine and coastal habitats.
The challenge was to create a compelling narrative - one that could transcend language barriers and speak primarily through the universal power of images.
We developed the concept of an elderly Sea Guardian - a symbolic figure of wisdom and lifelong care for the sea - paired with a young girl, representing the future and the new generations growing up with a stronger environmental awareness.
Through sight, touch, and wonder, the old man reveals the beauty of Italy’s coasts and seas to the child, teaching her the importance of marine conservation by awakening her senses and curiosity.
Following the writing of the concept and storyboard, the team traveled to Puglia for filming and photography. The region was selected for its extraordinary variety of stunning coastal locations - ideal for offering international audiences a rich visual taste of Italy’s seascapes.
The result: five narrative video episodes and one introductory spot, crafted with a fresh storytelling approach - far from traditional documentary tones - designed to immerse international viewers in the Italian coastal experience while spotlighting the country’s efforts in marine habitat protection and restoration.
The video editing was enhanced by archival footage from the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE), ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research), and the Italian Navy.
This content also served as the basis for five additional documentary-style videos, providing international audiences with deeper insights into the campaign’s themes - supported by infographics and technical explanations to ensure clarity and accessibility.
